Well, some hours back we posted an article on our first impressions of a new app – JaxtrSMS – from Sabeer Bhatia through which users can send SMS anywhere in the world for free.
Our initial impression was surely that this could be the app which can revolutionize our communication. The fact that through this app users can send messages even to phones which did not have this app seemed to be the winning feature over competitors like Whatsapp. Had, this been the case, users would have been able to send free messages even to the simplest phones existing. However, this is not the case.
There is a big catch in this app which we discovered while using the app today. Messages through JaxtrSMS are delivered to phones only when they are connected to the internet – meaning both sending and receiving phones need to be connected to the internet to send and receive messages. With this limitation we are back to an app which is limited for communication between smartphone users only. With this limitation, we think that JaxtrSMS is back in the competition sphere of Whatsapp. Moreover, there is yet no clarity on whether we can share media like pictures, etc via JaxtrSMS or not. This is something we can easily do using Whatsapp.
I retested the app again to find out more about the internet connectivity issue. And as it turns out,i was wrong the first time, when i mentioned that the app works only when both the parties (sender and receiver) have Internet access. The app works fine even if the receiving end is not connected to Internet.
Okay, you caught me with my pants down this time.
Another question which pops up in our mind is that is JaxtrSMS really an SMS sending app or just a messaging app. This is because, we generally associate SMS with the message which is delivered to us through the network service provider irrespective of the fact that whether the phone has internet connection or not.
We also faced some minor issue while registering the app on our iPhone. The verification code got delivered to us 10 times instead of the desirable one time.
Neverthless, its a good app to have. Also, it is still in beta phase. So, we can expect some enhancements in the future.
Do let us know if you have tried this app and do let us know your views too.
